Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

with hypnotherapy

Over the last 30 years Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has

become established as the leading therapy for issues related to

negative emotions such as anxiety, depression and stress.

CBT is based on the principle of ‘emotional responsibility’ which

describes how people can gain control over the emotions they feel

when reacting to events or issues in their lives.

Often it is not the events themselves that cause negative emotions,

such as anxiety, but the irrational or unhealthy beliefs people hold

about themselves, others, or the world in general and through which

the events are viewed that cause emotional disturbance.

CBT both provides insight into and challenges these unhealthy and

irrational beliefs and helps control to be gained over emotions they

drive. This control provides the emotional and behavioural freedom

to act in more positive and creative ways to achieve personal goals,

whether it be passing an exam, coming to terms with a significant

life event or simply being able to enjoy the simple everyday pleasures

again.

The therapeutic process of CBT is a tried and tested approach that

deals with real life issues in a structured and pragmatic way and

that seeks to allow the client to identify those things in their life that

can be changed and to do something constructive about them and

to accept those things that cannot be changed. This represents a

major step towards achieving a balanced inner emotional life.

Typically the first consultation will focus on identifying the specific

problem as well as providing the client with a clear understanding

of CBT, explaining the process of psychological change and the

role of both the client and the therapist.

In second session the irrational negative belief that is maintaining

the problem is assessed in detail, a positive version of it created

and a specific goal for therapy established.

The third session is focussed on challenging the irrational belief

and helping to replace it with a rational alternative .

In fourth session the client is helped to start integrating the insights

gained through practice in their thoughts and behaviour outside of

the sessions. Hypnotherapeutic techniques including visualisation

and direct suggestion can be used ,where appropriate, to help clients

to more fully integrate the new rational beliefs and rid themselves of

their old irrational beliefs that lie at the core of emotional disturbance.

The later sessions focus on the long term maintenance of the new ways

of thinking and behaving learnt in previous sessions.
